In Uptown Athens sits one of the state’s most respected from-scratch bakeries and cafés, Fluff Bakery. Open since the last half of 2010, Fluff has become a favorite stop for students and locals with a hankering for sweetly different pastries and meals made with local ingredients. Owners Jess and Jason Kopelwitz love running a business in Athens for a few reasons, namely because Fluff is the only place in town pastry lovers can find Fluff’s brand of sugary goodness.

“There are bakeries in Athens, but there’s no place that provides the kind of bakery items we have,” Jason said.

“It’s hard to find monster cupcakes that are really good,” added Jess.

The Kopelwitz duo sees their customer as someone who is willing to pay a little bit more for a quality that’s different from non-independent bakeries in Athens, like Kroger and Wal-mart.

“In Athens we’re lucky because, although it’s a smaller group of people who actually live here, most of them have an appreciation for people who are starting from scratch and doing things different from the usual mass-produced, everything uniform and no flavor,” Jess said.

“[In Athens County] everyone is so self-reliant. And we have people who are into doing new things and being a part of a progressive culture,” Jason added. “Then to be in the middle of Appalachia with all these progressive things going on, as well as the cultural exposure, it makes us excited to start a family here some day.”

The Kopelwitzes also value Athens’ young student population and being able to teach them life lessons about customer service and making quick, educated decisions. “There are some things you can never truly learn just from school,” Jess said.

The couple just bought a house in Athens and, according to Jess, the serene nature of their location and proximity to the bike trails truly make their home an escape from work.

“We’re kind of up in the West Hills and literally live two minutes from the bike trails,” Jess said. “It’s one of those places when I work a 12 hour day, I can go home and go for a walk. And it’s awesome. We have all these beautiful trails and water and a lot of ability to get out there and move.”

And the couple has no plans to relocate any time soon. In fact, they are the envy of their city-bound friends.

“We have a lot of friends down in Columbus who have families around busy streets and they just think ‘Oh my gosh, it would be so nice to be here and have open space.’”

Our monthly Lunch & Learn series is always a great free resources for area businesses and entrepreneurs. Our most recent seminar focused on team-building for  staff situations. We were fortunate to have Dan Vorisek, Interim Director of Outdoor Pursuits for Ohio University speak to our guests about various aspects of building a team within staff.

Dan Presented the crowd with a great power-point presentation to illustrate his message. Much of the crowd asked to have this presentation, and Dan very willing has shared this with us. I am posting it here for readers to access. Many thanks to Dan for being so generous with his time and knowledge!

Remember the Lunch & Learn Series occurs the third Thursday of every month and is free. The Lunch & Learn series is made possible through the Entrepreneurial Development Group and it’s partners: Business Remixed (Athens County Economic Development Council), The OU Innovation Center, The Small Business Development Center@The Voinovich School, and Tech Growth Ohio. One of our most important jobs in Economic Development is to meet with our existing companies to see how they are doing and to present them with resources when they need help.  In meeting with our partners over the last few months we all decided that having a Biz Fair at a central location would be a great benefit to business as their time is sparse.

Last Thursday, Business Remixed joined forces with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Ohio University’s Ohio Small Business Development Center and The Ohio University Innovation Center for the first ever BIZ Fair.  The purpose of the BIZ fair was to give businesses access to resources in one convenient location.  It also provided a great networking opportunity and gave the vendors that participated an opportunity to show case their services.

The event was free of charge, and participants had the opportunity to network and hear presentations from vendors and service providers.  The vendors also had booths following the presentation to answer questions.

The Athens County Economic Development Council (Business Remixed) looks forward to collaborating again with our partners above to bring resources and solutions to or local companies.

Your success is our success!

My favorite week of the year is here! Oh Yeah….Ohio Brew Week. I attended my first 2011 event on Saturday night at the Ohio University Inn.  The Inn hosted a Rock ‘n’ Roast BBQ and boy it was rockin’. I arrived  there with daughter Camille in tow, ready for some great food and company. What i found on the patio was pretty awesome. The place was packed full of families and other brew-goers enjoying this kick off event.  The smell of BBQ could be detected all the way down Richland Ave, and if that were not enough to entice, The Unlikely (band) were belting out tunes that had the crowd dancing despite the heat.

Dancing Machines!!

There were many familiar faces among the crowd. We sat at a table with my friend Kristie and her two boys, one of which quickly decided Camille was about the coolest thing going. Also sharing this table in the sun were the Millers and the Bertuna’s. We enjoyed the amazing bbq and, of course, brew. This turned out to be one of those good ole’ fashioned family events. Truly there was something for everyone here.

Hot Mammas.....no really, it was so hot out!

I ran into my friends Greg and Steph Kaple, who just became parents to Charlotte. Greg declared that we had to season our girls because there were the next generation of Brew Week enthusiasts! Ummm ….maybe a few generations away Greg!

Future Brew Week enthusiasts?......distant future please!

In the current economic climate many business owners are rethinking their marketing strategies and looking for more effective ways to reach their customers and clients.  In meeting with local businesses and discussing the issues they are having this topic is always in the top 3!

So the Athens County Entrepreneurship Development Group decided to invite Ed Burghard the Executive Director of the Ohio Business Development Coalition to be our guest speaker at June 16th’s Lunch and Learn Workshop. Ed presented to some of our local companies on the consultative selling process as a way to accelerate the growth of their business. His presentation highlighted the Principles of Consultative Selling which included the following three categories: Consultative Selling Model, Benefits versus Features, and Effective Objection Handling. At the end of the workshop the businesses and organizations that attended were given effective tools to help change their product/service features into compelling benefits their customers want to buy.
