Health Care Hot Spot

Forget what you’ve heard about health care in Appalachia. Athens County is not the place to move if you suffer from “white coat syndrome.” We have 1.74 physicians for every 1,000 people, compared to the U.S. average of 1.70. So prepare to meet lots of doctors when you’re checking out the Athens scene.

Holistic Health

Athens County prides itself on being a well-rounded place. We work hard to maintain a healthy mind/body/spirit balance. Is it any wonder that we are home to Ohio’s only osteopathic medicine program?

Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) was established in 1975. Since then, it has graduated some 2,500 doctors. The majority serve as primary care physicians and reflect the college’s dedication to rural, underserved populations.

Research is also a top priority for OU-COM. Research and clinical faculty work closely together, and ties with the county’s hospitals and clinics are so strong, it’s hard for the casual observer to tell where one ends and the other begins…

Collaboration for Comprehensive Care

In 2001, OU-COM spun its clinical operation off into a private corporation run by the college’s faculty. The new facility, University Medical Associates, still plays an important role in training future doctors, and now, with offices throughout Athens County, it has expanded the medical services available to our community.

OU-COM’s Appalachian Rural Health Institute Diabetes Center is housed in the Cornwell Center for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Care. The Cornwell Center is just one of the recently built, state-of-the-art facilities you’ll find in the O’Bleness Medical Park. The spacious complex also hosts O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, the Athens Surgery Center, Health Recovery Services, the Athens Cancer Center and Tri-County Mental Health & Counseling Services, Inc. It’s a one-stop shop for anything that ails you.

Our newest clinic is Holzer Clinic. With over 25 doctors working in this 68,000 square ft State-of-the-Art medical facility, you will find specialties including Family Practice, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Allergy/Asthma, Cardiology, Rheumatology, General Surgery, Gastroenterology, OB/GYN, Occupational Medicine, Ear/Nose/Throat, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, Podiatry, Audiology/Hearing Aids, Chiropractic, Sleep Medicine, Physical Therapy and Urgent ‘ Care services.
